Kawambwa, February 5 -- Luapula Province Provincial Education officer (PEO), Florence Kanchebele has observed that the heavy rains experienced in the region have given the education sector challenges because it led to the damage of school structures.
Ms.Kanchebele says about 14 schools in Luapula that included two high schools were ripped off between last year’s and this year’s rainy seasons.
She said the disasters have brought a lot of challenges to rehabilitate the affected structures on time due to financial problems.
Ms. Kanchebele was speaking in Kawambwa yesterday when United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) handed over a rehabilitated staff house and a 1 x 2 classroom block at Munkanta basic school to the government.
She noted it is a pity that the disasters have been happening at a time when there was no emergency funds to renovate them.
Ms Kanchebele said government too is busy constructing new basic and high schools to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
She said since there are many constructions of schools taking place, enrolment among pupils and access to education has greatly improved.
Meanwhile, Ms Kanchebele has suggested that her office will embark on addressing parents and churches in the area to contribute building materials towards the construction of classrooms and staff houses.
However, she earnestly appealed to the UNHCR to consider completing the rehabilitation of the remaining classrooms.
Ms. Kanchebele also implored parents and guardians in the area to ensure that the girl child benefit all levels of education for the betterment of their future.
